Science of Violence®: The Science of Prone Restraint Deaths

GTD Scientific presents 'The Science of Prone Restraint Deaths'.

This course is designed to help participants understand the mechanical and physiological principles behind deaths that occur in the prone restraint position. By explaining how inefficient respiration can lead to fatal outcomes in susceptible people the course equips decision-makers, policy makers, training curriculum developers, law enforcement professionals, and legal practitioners with the knowledge needed to make informed judgments in training, the field and the courtroom.

Participants will learn how key risk factors such as body position, weight distribution, and exertion interact with human physiology to create potentially life-threatening conditions. The course draws on peer-reviewed research, forensic case studies, and validated biomechanical methods to provide a reliable foundation for evaluating training protocols, police practices, and incidents involving prone restraint related cardiac arrest.

By the end of this course, you will:

  1. Describe the mechanics of upright respiration and the physiological basis for gas exchange.
  2. Define hypercapnia and outline its role in metabolic acidosis and the progression to cardiac arrest.
  3. Identify 8 specific physiological and situational risk factors associated with prone restraint-related deaths.
  4. Recognize these risk factors in real-world field scenarios.
  5. Compare alternate prone restraint techniques and evaluate their associated risk factors.
  6. Reduce agency liability by applying scientific principles to inform the development of safer prone restraint policies and officer training protocols.
